When I student taught last year, I asked my students to participate in a Spring Break Reading Challenge. Using Google Forms, students kept track of how many books and pages they read throughout the one week vacation, and the class who read the most would win a prize. Additionally, every student who participated ended up getting a HW pass, but we didn't advertise that until afterwards.
In addition to tracking their reading throughout the break, we also wanted to see what they were up to, so we had them take pictures of WHERE they were reading their books. This encouraged them to take a book a long on their vacations and to read in new and unexpected places.

With Spring Break just around the corner once again, I plan to do another challenge with all of my classes. This time, I will have my students set goals before hand and write a reflective piece about their reading habits outside of school. I'd like to find a way to incorporate audio books as well. There are a lot of possibilities with this activity, so I'll let you know what I come up with!
